Once upon a time there once was a girl called Tanya. She lived by the sea in a little cottage. One day as she was baking some cakes to take to a very sick friend. She saw a little old lady outside her window. "My pretty one," said the old woman. "If you'll give me a bit of your cakes, I'll grant you two wishes." Even though Tanya didn't believe the old woman could really grant her two wishes, she didn't want to hurt the old woman's feelings. So she wished for something simple, a new comb. Out of thin air the old woman produced a beautiful golden comb. They the old woman made Tanya promise to use no other comb but the golden one on her long flowing hair. "You must be a fairy (old woman)," Tanya said. "Maybe so," said she. "But Fairy or no, you have one wish left. Use it wisely my dear."
That very evening Tanya went to sit on a rock by the sea to comb her long golden hair. "Oh! Oh!" she cried as luminous pearls started falling out of her hair. She quickly gathered all the pearls up in her apron and was about to return to her little cottage to hide them. Suddenly a big wave came rolling in from the sea. Riding on the very top of the wave was the most handsome man she'd ever seen. His hair was gold like her comb and his skin was very brown. Then she saw his long green tail glistening in the sun. Upon seeing Tanya he fell madly in love with her and knew he must have her for his own.
To lure her into the sea, he cast a spell with his sirens song. "Golden, Golden, bright as the morning sun. Silver Silver, glowing as full a moonlit night. But you, my beautiful maiden, are more precious still. Come live with me and be my one true love, throughout eternity." The merman's song was so beautiful that when Tanya looked deep into his turquoise eyes, she fell instantly in love with him. She cried, "I can not go with you for I would surely perish under the oceans waves, even though I will love you til' the day I die."
On the sand a short distance away the small old fairy woman appeared. She reminded Tanya that she had one more wish to use. Tanya closed her eyes wished for the power to live under the sea with her love. All of a sudden her legs turned into a beautiful shimmery tail and she couldn't wait to get into the sea.
Her handsome merman took her by the hand and taught her how to swim with him, to his palace under the sea. The only thing she brought was her golden comb. She wanted to be able to adorn her hair with pearls and be beautiful for her handsome merman as they played and laughed among the rocks.
They say sometimes at twilight, the magical time between the suns last rays and the first stars at night. The sailors of old, often tell tales of the sea peoples laughter, echoing off of the rocks and the oceans waves. It mingles softly with the breezes, that sings the storms to sleep. If you are lucky enough to hear the song the sirens sing, you will forever have safe sailing upon the oceans waves.
